Rosenblatt Stadium

Rosenblatt Stadium saw the greats during College World Series run

rosenblatt stadium

OMAHA — Rosenblatt Stadium filled up early Tuesday evening for what could have been the final College World Series game played on the iconic field that has hosted the tournament for the last 61 years. More than 23,000 fans were taking no chance at missing the final act in Rosenblatt's long-running drama.
A South Carolina victory would complete a two-game sweep of UCLA in the championship finals and make a Game 3 Wednesday unnecessary. Next year the competition moves 3 miles uptown to the new $128 million TD Ameritrade Park.
The minor league Omaha Royals will play the rest of their season at Rosenblatt, and the United Football League Omaha Hawks will hold games there in the fall. But eventually the stadium will be razed to provide parking for the nearby Henry Doorly Zoo.
That lent a bittersweet feeling to this year's competition, particularly for the coaches of the eight teams who survived regional and super regional play. The thrill of advancing to the college game's ultimate stage was tempered by the reality they would never return to Omaha's "Diamond on the Hill."
As teams were eliminated and coaches went through their final postgame interviews, they reflected on what Rosenblatt has meant to them and to baseball:
•Jack Leggett, who captained the 1976 University of Maine team that reached the CWS and led Clemson here six times: "There is no better championship; there is no better place than Rosenblatt. ... It just keeps getting better and better. It's every bit what I built it up to be for our players. There will be another awesome situation in a new stadium, and I hope we can be one of those teams that plays in the last games at Rosenblatt and the first games at the new stadium."
•Jim Schlossnagle, who brought TCU to its first World Series this season: "Every single day at Rosenblatt was like life stopped. You didn't care about anything else. I told our players there are no bad days in Omaha. They have a big challenge ahead of them to replicate everything about this place at the new stadium, but I'm sure they'll do it."
•Mike Martin, who coached his son at Rosenblatt while bringing Florida State to Omaha 14 times: "It was an unbelievable experience for our young men to be out here and participate in Rosenblatt's last year. They will always know they were here for the last time around. For me, it was different to walk off that field for the last time. Rosenblatt will always be Rosenblatt — there will never be another place like it."
•Sunny Golloway, an assistant on the 1994 Oklahoma national title team who brought the Sooners back for the first time in 15 years: "I told our players they will remember this forever. We're going to remember the lighting, the opening ceremony, the warm welcome. Knowing the great tradition of Rosenblatt Stadium, we were truly blessed to be here for this final season."

Shelter Island National Guardsman Joseph Theinert killed in Afghanistan

shelter island

A National Guard soldier from Shelter Island serving active duty in Afghanistan was killed on Friday by a roadside bomb while on foot patrol.
Lt. Joseph Theinert, 24, was on his first deployment tour overseas.
He had volunteered for a program that allows Guard members to serve three years on active duty prior to returning to a local Guard unit.
Theinert, who completed the ROTC program at SUNY Albany, is survived by his mother, Chrystyna Kestler; father, James Theinert; and brothers Jim, 22, and Billy, 25.
"His life was based on service; it truly was," Kestler said. "It's such a family tragedy, and a community loss."
His mother described him as selfless, humble, and brave - and a mischievous child, but never malicious.
Friends and family members from Shelter Island, where he graduated from high school, have come together, she said.

"We haven't had to plan a thing. The community has taken care of everything."
She recalled that just before he was deployed to Afghanistan, his brother "Jimbo" asked Theinert if he was frightened to go. Her son, who had wanted to serve his country since he was a little boy, was not scared, she said. He replied that he was "born for it."

Kyle Boller

Kyle Boller: Carrie Prejean Boyfriend

kyle boller

Quarterback Kyle Boller is Carrie Prejean boyfriend, actually after this weekend you can call him her husband. I have your attention now right because you are wondering who the heck would marry Prejean, well never fear I am here to tell you all about Kyle which of course includes some pictures and a video of this hottie.
The hunky football player Kyle Boller is Carrie Prejean’s boyfriend but only for a little while longer as the two are rumored to be tying the knot this weekend in San Diego. Kyle and Carrie became engaged in February after a year and a half of dating. It is interesting timing given the fact that Kyle will be vying for a spot as back up quarterback with the Oakland Raiders when training camp begins. Certainly hope the wedding doesn’t distract him this may be his last chance to keep playing.
If you aren’t a huge football fan you probably haven’t heard much about Boller. Let me tell you about him. The Burbank, California born and raised Kyle was born to play football. He proved he was a force to be reckoned with during his days at William S. Hart High School, he was even the California State Player in 1998. Boller at one time was compared to the great John Elway during his school days. Kyle spent his college years playing for University of California.
Carrie Prejean
Boller was the first round draft pick for the Baltimore Ravens in 2003, however his first season was cut short when he was injured in the thigh during the ninth game of the season. He made a great recovery and started in all games during his second season with the team. In fact he had career highs during that season. During his third season with Ravens he was yet again injured, this time it was turf toe that put him on the can not play list for seven games. Kyle fully recovered from his injuries and went on to play for the Ravens until 2009. He continued to try and prove himself despite rarely being the starting QB.
In 2009 Kyle became a free agent and signed with my favorite team the St. Louis Rams. Unfortunately for the Boller the Rams were a disaster during that season and he was unable to make any sort of lasting impression. After his disastrous year with the Rams Kyle recently signed with the Oakland Raiders.
Kyle Boller may be Carrie Prejean boyfriend or future husband but he is clearly more than that, he is a football player who has worked hard to have a career in the sport he loves.

Cycle helmets, Ibuprofen, Jammie Dodgers, and, er, cocktails. Three mums set off on ...a wheely big adventure

These three ladies joined over 1,000 riders taking part in the 216-mile Co-operation Ireland Belfast to Dublin Maracycle at the weekend. Kerry McKittrick finds out how they got on
Pedal power: from left, Fionnula Mann, Maura Corey and Christine Nagle

A Friday night in Belfast and three busy mums are preparing for the weekend. The usual bustle of wrapping presents for weekend birthday parties is accompanied by the frantic packing for a scouting weekend. As well as this the ladies are putting together their own bags: cleats, cycling helmets, bananas and figs rolls, and Ibuprofen.
Fionnula Mann, Christine Nagle and Maura Corey have been pounding pavements together for six years. They have all run marathons and taken part in running competitions.
However, 10 weeks ago when Fionnula’s husband Simon suggested they try a different sort of challenge, the ladies hung up their trainers and climbed on their bikes to train for the Co-operation Ireland Belfast to Dublin Maracycle. The maracycle was a two-day event last Saturday and Sunday with more than 1,000 cyclists pedalling from Belfast to Dublin and returning along the same route the next day.
The trail took in Moira, Banbridge and Drogheda and finished at Dublin City University. In total the cyclists covered a distance of 216 miles, a mammoth challenge for the trio as none of them had any cycling experience.
Saturday, June 26
Fionnula says:
8am — We set off from Queen’s PEC in Belfast. It was a slow start as cyclists were waved off in groups of 100 to avoid crashes. The whole event was very well organised.
10am — Arrived at Banbridge for refuelling after 27.5 miles. The weather was warm but cloudy — thunder has been forecast but it didn't happen. There were more women at this race as a lot of cycling clubs were taking part. We had cups of tea with bananas and fig rolls.
12.20pm — 60 miles done as we arrived at Castlebellingham and the legs started to get sore. We stopped for lunch of Ibuprofen washed down by a sandwich and coffee. Very hot weather and I needed to have my tyres pumped up by a fellow competitor.
5pm — Finished at the Dublin City University campus. There was a delay at the university as we had to wait for a police escort to take us into the city.
Fiona says:
We’re tired but glad that we finished. The last 20 miles of the route were utterly brutal as it was very hilly which meant it was simply exhausting. We managed to average a speed of 15 miles an hour which is exactly what we wanted to do so we finished the course in seven hours. We’re all dreading tomorrow but at least the hill part is at the beginning next time instead of the end.
There is dinner laid on at the hotel but we’re heading into town after a long hot shower for some pasta and a glass of wine before we do it all over again tomorrow.
Sunday, June 27
8am — There was a smaller number of people on the second day because some were only doing one way and others dropped out. We were given the same police escort to Dublin Airport then we were away.
9.30am — We had an early stop at Lisnea after 14 miles. It was just before the hills so we refuelled on fig rolls and Jammie Dodgers. The weather was nice again and we had a tailwind this time which helped.
12.30pm — We stopped for lunch at 40 miles but it was at the top of a hill so you had to work to get your food.
3.30pm — The last bit was really the worst for me but arriving at Banbridge meant the finishing line was nearly in sight.
5pm — Finish at Queen’s PEC. The same timings as the day before.
Fionnula says:
We’re all so proud of ourselves and feel a tremendous sense of achievement — we felt it even after the first day. I’m quite surprised I managed to do it and now that it's all over I think I would prefer to do that than run a marathon. We took ourselves for a cocktail on Stephen’s Green on Saturday night and kept going over what we had done. The second day was the hardest — psychologically — before we got going. I just kept thinking about those hills but I think because I was prepared for them the second time round they were easier.
Many people were pushing their bikes up the hills but we didn’t and we stuck to our average of 15 miles an hour.
I have to say I thought the whole event was very well organised and marshalled brilliantly by both the PSNI and the Garda. The roads were one of the things I was concerned about before the Maracycle. We were looked after very well though.
I found the camaraderie of the whole event was brilliant. We pulled over to get a drink of water at one stage and three of the motorbike escorts asked us if we were ok. The atmosphere of the whole event was fabulous — it was all about the taking part and not the end result. I still can't believe we did it.
Fionnula’s journey
Fionnula Mann (44) is a speech and language therapist. She lives in Belfast with her husband Simon and their three daughters. She says:
I've been a runner for years and I've trained for three marathons. I wasn't able to compete in two of them because of injury but I ran the Prague marathon in four hours and 10 minutes.
I was running until 10 weeks ago when my husband suggested I take part in the Belfast to Dublin maracycle. I brought it up with the other girls who I train with and we decided to have a go.
We're doing it for a number of different reasons. It was frustrating to not be able to take part in those two marathons and I think you want to challenge yourself as you get older.
Cycling is very different from running in a number of ways. For a start it takes a long time with a lot more effort to get results. A 45-minute run is a good way to expend a lot of energy but you need to be on a bike for a couple of hours to achieve the same results. You need more fuel too. We've been trying to eat balanced diets of carbohydrates and protein. Lots of porridge, bananas and fig rolls.
Cycling is also a lot more dangerous than running. When you run you tend to go down lanes or footpaths.
When you cycle on roads you're at the mercy of the traffic. The highway code says that drivers should treat cyclists as if they were a small car but that doesn't happen. Motorists don't give cyclists respect and it is risky.
You go much further on the bike and we've seen some beautiful countryside around Belfast that none of us knew was there. We don't get injured as easily either — although you can take a tumble off your bike every now and again.
It has been tough, though, because the training takes up more time. Each week I've been doing one long ride of about 60 miles and then two or three smaller ones. When your kids are asking you not to go out again that can be difficult!
We did the North Down Coastal race a couple of weeks ago, which was 60 miles. It was good but it was harder than I thought it would be. There was a noticeable lack of women at it. Maybe 10% of those taking part were female.
For me this will be a personal challenge — I’m a bit nervous about the whole thing!
Maura’s journey
Maura Corey (43) is a pharmacist. She lives in Belfast with her |husband Brian and their son and three daughters. She says:
I got talked into this by Fionnula Mann. I tried really hard not to do it — I even ignored her texts but she got me in the end. I think it was actually the challenge itself that persuaded me.
I had a bike — my husband bought it for me because he’s a cyclist too and has even done the maracycle a couple of times. I hadn’t really used it very much though. It was literally a case of the three of us getting on the bikes 10 weeks ago.
I found the training very difficult. I didn’t appreciate that starting to do a different kind of exercise would take so much out of me. I thought my legs would be stronger because of all the running — I managed to do the Paris marathon in just under four hours.
The other two had done a little bit of cycling before so it wasn’t quite as hard on them and I admit I did feel like giving up sometimes. I’m also the only one who works full-time so it hasn’t been as easy for me to find time to train.
Time has been the biggest issue because we need to do one big cycle every week. I think my youngest daughter will be glad when I don't have to train any more.
I’m fine now though — I got over all that. We did the North Down Coastal Challenge of 60 miles a couple of weeks ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it — particularly the first half although the roads got a bit busy in the second half.
We really got glorious weather though. There were 700 cyclists altogether so we got some really good support.
The camaraderie was great and we realised that doing this is much more about the competing than the actual competition. I’m not any fitter now — you get a sore rear end and sore thighs through cycling.
Finishing the maracycle will give a real sense of achievement.
Christine’s journey
Christine Nagle (45) is a housewife who lives in Belfast with her husband Michael and their five children. She says:
We are all runners. I ran the Paris marathon in three hours 59 minutes and then I injured my knee so I couldn't run as much as I had.
It was Fionnula who suggested we do the maracycle — we're all training partners anyway. I jumped at the chance because I liked the idea of the challenge and I thought that cycling might be a bit easier for me after injury. Either that or it's some kind of mid-life crisis!
The training has been tough because it is really time-consuming. Like every kind of training you have good days and bad days too. When the weather has been nice it's been great but I would much rather run in the rain than cycle in it.
The traffic and reduced viability on the roads can make it very difficult. It's taken a bit of getting used to but it has been fun. We've all fallen over at some point but luckily no-one's been injured. We were taking a break at one point and I bent down to answer the phone and just kept going. I like training with the girls and we've seen parts of Belfast I didn't even know existed.
I think the thing I’m least looking forward to is getting on the bike again the next day — it’s one thing to cycle 100 miles but it’s another thing to do it all over again the day after. I am looking forward to the craic though and the company.
I used to be a runner but now I think I’m both a runner and a cyclist.

Detroit Tigers pitcher Joel Zumaya suffered what appeared to be a
dreadful elbow injury Monday night in Minneapolis, leaving the reliever
writhing on the field in agonizing pain. With one out in the eighth
inning, the hard-throwing Zumaya threw a 99-mph fastball to Twins outfielder Delmon Young.
Zumaya reacted almost instantly, twisting in discomfort before
falling to the ground. His right hand was visibly shaking, and Tigers
catcher Greg Laird -- who was 60 feet away from Zumaya at the time of
the injury -- said he heard a "pop."
Zumaya, who has a history of injury troubles, is known for pitching
at extremely high velocities. He was once clocked throwing a pitch at 104 mph.
After the game, Tigers manager Jim Leyland said, "It obviously
doesn't look good. It's an awful bad feeling when you see something like
that happen to anybody." Scroll down for unsettling video of Zumaya's

Verizon Email Outage: Twitter and Central for Webmail

We have some disappointing news for customers on Verizon now, as it appears as if the carrier’s home webmail service is completely down – with the outage disabling the login process to email features.
Worst yet for Verizon customers, it looks as if the carrier has yet to post any updates regarding the outage, meaning that users have no indication as to when the service will be available again.
I’ve had a quick check on Verizon’s official Twitter page and there is no sign of Verizon acknowledging the outage. Luckily for you, you can keep checking the latest updates on Twitter from other users at this page.
You would think that Verizon would at least let their customers know that they are working on a quick fix to the problem. We’ll update you when we know more.
In the meantime, let us know your location details and if your email is still affected or not.

Rumor Claims Britney Spears Dead

britney spears dead

The fake celebrity death circuit has returned to old territory with a new Britney Spears dead rumor doing the rounds today.
According to one version of the Britney Spears dead rumors doing the rounds, she was killed five years ago and is currently being played by a body double….yeah, we never said these rumors make sense.
The resurfacing of the Britney Spears dead rumors though may actually be related to other news: about a month ago Britney announced that when she died, she wanted her body cryogenically frozen, so she can be bought back to life when the technology is there to save her. OK, that’s nearly as nuts as the death rumor, but we can at least confirm this story.
We’re giving the Britney Spears died rumors a 4/10 for originality.
As always, for the record, Britney Spears has not died, Britney Spears is not dead. Nothing more to see here, move along.

Robert Byrd

Sen. Robert Byrd dies at 92

robert byrd
Sen. Byrd talks to members of the media before the resumption of President Clinton's impeachment trial. Byrd was openly hostile over Clinton's affair with White House intern Monica S. Lewinsky.

Robert Carlyle Byrd, the West Virginia Democrat who was often called this generation's conscience of the Senate for his devotion to the system of constitutional checks and balances and the prerogatives of power, died Monday. He was 92.

Byrd, who served longer than any member of Congress in U.S. history and cast more congressional votes than anyone since taking office in January 1959, died at about 3 a.m. at Inova Hospital in Fairfax, Va., a spokesman for the family said.
He was admitted to a Washington-area hospital late last week suffering from what a spokesman said was believed to be heat exhaustion and severe dehydration as a result of the high temperatures in the capital.
As president pro tem of the Senate, he was third in line for succession to the presidency. The post of president pro tem now goes to Sen. Daniel K. Inouye, a Democrat from Hawaii.

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin III, a Democrat, will appoint someone to finish Byrd's term, which ends in 2013.

Byrd's death marks another milestone in the demise of a postwar generation of "Old Bulls" who ran Congress for decades. Many of them — such as Pete V. Domenici (R-N.M.) and John Warner (R-Va.) — have retired. Ted Stevens (R- Alaska) lost his 2008 bid for reelection in the face of corruption charges. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) died last year.

In recent years, the wheelchair-bound Byrd was not as strong a presence in the Senate as he once was, making rare speaking appearances. Byrd showed up at a Senate hearing in May and read a statement cautioning colleagues against severely limiting use of the filibuster, a device he used to hold the Senate floor for 14 hours and 13 minutes in an unsuccessful filibuster of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Renowned for carrying a copy of the U.S. Constitution in his left shirt pocket to brandish at colleagues and constituents, Byrd had a deep commitment to history. A master of Senate rules, he was by turns protective and disruptive of procedure, slowing debate with long, florid orations that invoked Greek philosophers, Roman generals and the Founding Fathers. But he could also pierce debate with a pointed comment.

When politicians were scrambling to create a Department of Homeland Security after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, he asked his colleagues, "Have we all completely taken leave of our senses? If ever there was a time for the Senate to throw a bucket of cold water on an overheated legislative process that is spinning out of control, it is now. Now!"

And as the Senate prepared to debate authorization for war in Iraq in early 2003, Byrd thrilled antiwar activists with his lament — "Today, I weep for my country" — and gave a speech that would be reprinted in several languages and posted on many websites — no small achievement for a man who did not use a computer. "We stand passively mute in the United States Senate, paralyzed by our own uncertainty, seemingly stunned by the sheer turmoil of events," he admonished. "We are truly sleepwalking through history."

He was sworn in as a congressman 17 days before President Harry S. Truman left the White House in 1953, and died as a senator nearly six decades later. In three terms in the House and nine in the Senate, he said his proudest legislative achievement was the defeat of the balanced budget amendment in the mid-1990s, which he likened to "putting an ugly tattoo on the head of a beautiful child." The "beautiful child" was the Constitution, and he was convinced that amending it by stripping Congress of its constitutional power of the purse would mar it forever. So when Congress passed the line-item veto in 1996, giving presidents blue-pencil authority over congressional appropriation, Byrd called it "one of the darkest moments in the history of the republic." Two years later, the courts agreed that the law crossed a line, ruling it unconstitutional.

Byrd was not always a champion of liberal causes. He had come of age as a member of the Ku Klux Klan and cast a "no" vote on the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 that prohibited discrimination against African Americans and others. He later renounced his actions in both cases and called his membership in the KKK "the worst mistake of my life."

Byrd was aghast whenever the Senate acceded to a president's wishes without debate or question. He was a stickler for the constitutional provisions for checks and balances that left Congress, known as "the people's house," in the lead on appropriations and taxation.

He was not afraid of standing up against presidents, even if they were fellow Democrats. Just days after the 1968 Tet offensive, the surprise assault against South Vietnamese and American forces that tipped U.S. public opinion against the Vietnam War, he told President Lyndon B. Johnson that American intelligence had failed, that "we should have known, we should have foreseen what happened." Johnson exploded. Byrd held his ground. "Mr. President, I didn't come here to be lectured," he recounted. "I'm no 'yes man.'"

Decades later, Byrd rose up to protect Congress' prerogatives against incursions of another Democratic president. Shortly after Barack Obama was sworn in, Byrd objected to the proliferation of White House staff czars that Obama chose to oversee policy areas such as healthcare.

"The rapid and easy accumulation of power by White House staff can threaten the constitutional system of checks and balances," Byrd said.

But if he was a protector of the Senate's role in balancing the power of the executive branch, he also was a deft manipulator of the legislative system. As chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Byrd was notorious for steering federal funds — and sometimes whole federal agencies — to West Virginia, where so many buildings and highways bore his name that the watchdog group Citizens Against Government Waste voted him "Alpha Porker." Columnists derided him for dismantling the government piece by piece and sending it to West Virginia: the FBI's fingerprint center to Clarksburg, an Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives weapons-tracking center to Martinsburg, a series of NASA-related projects to Wheeling Jesuit University.

Byrd didn't seem to mind the criticism. He often bragged that when he was in the state Legislature in 1947, West Virginia had four miles of divided, four-lane highways, but that by his eighth term in the Senate in 2004, the number was up to 1,033 miles. Only once — when he tried to uproot 6,000 employees of the Central Intelligence Agency and relocate half of them to West Virginia — did Congress balk. Dealing with Byrd, said former Rep. Dave McCurdy (D-Okla.), then chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, was "almost like a meeting you have with a foreign government."

So fierce was Byrd's control of the institution that former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, on winning a Senate seat from New York in 2000, sought his counsel on how to navigate the Senate. Byrd, who had been openly hostile over her husband's dalliance with White House intern Monica S. Lewinsky, taught her well. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Byrd helped Clinton secure $20 billion for New York's recovery. "Count me in as the third senator from New York," he said at the time.
On election night 2000, when Byrd, then 83, was reelected with his largest margin ever — a 78% majority, carrying all 55 counties and all but seven of the state's 1,970 precincts — he remarked: "West Virginia has always had four friends: God Almighty, Sears Roebuck, Carter's Little Liver Pills, and Robert C. Byrd." (He later dropped Sears from the list, complaining about inadequate service on a heater.)

In 2006 he was reelected to an unprecedented ninth term in the Senate, winning 64% of the vote.

Byrd, who in various stages of his career served as the Democratic whip, the majority leader, Appropriations Committee chairman and Senate president pro tem, was also the chamber's unofficial historian, writing a two-volume history of the institution with the assistance of Senate historian Richard Baker.
He rose to speak often and eloquently on the Senate floor about the institution's history, giving more than 100 lectures on Senate history topics. The speeches created a certain buzz in Washington, but colleagues rarely waited through the orations. For the most part, he wrote the speeches himself, and they carried the lyrical tone and the sweeping sense of history of a self-made man.

Born in North Wilkesboro, N.C., on Nov. 20, 1917, as Cornelius Calvin Sale Jr., he was a year old when his mother died during the influenza pandemic and his father sent him to be raised by an aunt and uncle in West Virginia. Vlurma and Titus Dalton Byrd re-christened him Robert Carlyle, and raised him in a background "as grindingly poor as that of any American politician," according to Michael Barone's "The Almanac of American Politics." They encouraged him to study, hoping he would escape the harsh poverty of coal mine country. And study he did, teaching himself to read, memorizing history lessons, becoming the valedictorian of his high school class at age 16. But they had no money for college.

Entering the job market at the height of the Depression, he took work in any field he could find — gas station attendant, meat cutter, produce salesman, welder. During World War II, welders were in demand at ship construction sites, and so off he went, building Liberty and Victory ships in Baltimore and Tampa, Fla. After the war, he came home to West Virginia.

In 1946, he ran for a seat in the state House of Delegates, campaigning, according to the Almanac, "in every hollow in the county, playing his fiddle and even going to the length of joining the Ku Klux Klan." He quickly renounced his membership but it would be years before he renounced segregationist politics — in 1967 he voted against confirmation of the Supreme Court's first black justice, Thurgood Marshall.

None of this hurt him politically in West Virginia. In fact, he never lost an election. When a congressman retired in 1952, Byrd won the seat. By 1958, with Dwight D. Eisenhower in the White House, despite opposition from the United Mine Workers Union and the coal companies, he won election to the U.S. Senate.

While in the state Legislature, he attended college but according to his Senate biography would not receive his degree in political science from Marshall University until 1994, some 60 years after high school. While in the Senate, he went to law school at night, graduating from American University at 46, receiving his diploma from the 1963 commencement speaker, President Kennedy. The years of protracted education made him zealous about knowledge. Even while campaigning in impoverished West Virginia, he infused his speeches with an old-fashioned, stem-winding oratory, calling on Cicero or Thucydides as needed, sometimes to the puzzlement of his constituents.

He was elected Democratic whip in 1971. In 1977 he was elevated to majority leader, serving there until 1981, and again from 1985 to 1989. He abandoned what he called "the grubby work" of being Senate majority leader in 1989, assuming the job he had long coveted: chairmanship of the Senate Appropriations Committee, where he vowed to become West Virginia's leading industry. In 2000 alone the appropriations bill included more than $1 billion of spending in West Virginia, much of it attributable to Byrd's steering.

In his later years, beset by health problems and mourning the loss of his wife Emma in March 2006 after 69 years of marriage, Byrd grew more publicly emotional. He cried on the Senate floor at the news that Kennedy had been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. When Kennedy suffered a seizure in Obama's post-inauguration lunch on Capitol Hill, Byrd was so upset that he too was taken out of the event in a wheelchair.

And he all but monopolized a hearing on tainted pet food from China, rhapsodizing over his Shih Tzu. So poignant were his outbursts that Democratic colleagues discussed — but did not implement — a plan making Byrd the emeritus chairman and naming Washington's Patty Murray the "acting chairwoman."

He is survived by daughters Mona Byrd Fatemi and Marjorie Byrd Moore, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren

2010 BET Awards Belong To Chris Brown, Alicia Keys And Prince

Performances from Eminem, Drake and Nicki Minaj also stand out

 Chris Brown

Chris Brown, Alicia Keys and Eminem shined the brightest among the star-filled Shrine Auditorium on Sunday night (June 27), wowing the audience at the 2010 BET Awards in Los Angeles.
Brown put out a sizzling tribute to Michael Jackson, just days after the one-year anniversary of the pop icon's death, with a medley that included "Remember the Time" and "Billie Jean." The embattled R&B star's take on "Man in the Mirror" was measured and emotional, tugging at the hearts of many as Brown broke down during the song's refrain.
The singer was decked out in full MJ gear, from the bandaged fingers to the high-waisted pants. As he struggled to finish the lyrics to the song, the audience assisted him, completing the lyrics he could not as he dropped and rose from his knees.
Alicia Keys was just as stirring, performing her own solo set and contributing to the tribute to Prince, who was honored with a lifetime-achievement award. Patti LaBelle and Janelle Monae also joined Keys to pay homage to the Purple One. Keys, replete with her newly public baby bump, sang "Adore" and shocked those in attendance when she crawled atop her piano to finish out the sexy number.
Eminem also performed twice, taking the stage with B.o.B for the "Airplanes" remix and his own "Not Afraid."
Drake was among the night's big winners, as he and Young Money cohort Nicki Minaj took home trophies for Best Hip-Hop Artist, male and female, respectively. The Lil Wayne protégés both shouted out their imprisoned CEO and later took part in crowd-pleasing performances.
Drake brought out Young Jeezy, after he ran through his own "Fireworks" and "Over," and the pair debuted the remix to the Snowman's latest, "Lose My Mind."
Young Money's leading lady was at the center of two performances: Ludacris' show-ending set and Diddy's Dirty Money showcase. Minaj was as colorful as ever, and the femcee was sexy in an outfit as tight as her razor-sharp rhymes. The Queens rapper shouted out her fellow female rhyme-slingers, helping to dial down the back-and-forth between her and Lil Kim.
Prince and John Legend were separately honored, the latter for his humanitarian efforts. Beyoncé's collaboration with Lady Gaga, "Telephone," took home the coveted Video of the Year award. Gary Coleman, Lena Horne and Teddy Pendergrass were recognized, with each dying in the past 12 months.
El DeBarge raised the crowd to its feet as the former Motown legend held his own with a mini-set that included his band's greatest hits, including "Rhythm of the Night."
Kanye West and T.I. both returned to the public's consciousness, as the MCs performed publicly for the first time since leaving the spotlight: West after his meltdown at the Video Music Awards last year and Tip after serving time for gun charges.
Tip took to the stage with Travis Barker on the drums, and in slick fashion, the Atlanta star performed "Takers" from his upcoming film of the same name.
West opened the show with "Power," the first single from his forthcoming album. The Chicago lyricist was spirited and styling, appearing in an all-red ensemble and rapping atop a constructed mountaintop.
Queen Latifah held down MC duties for the evening and poked and prodded at the assembled celebrities in attendance. The actress raked on Drake for the rapper's line "Set it off, Jada Pinkett," with her own rendition that mentioned her character in the movie "Set It Off," name-dropping Cleo.

Soulful El DeBarge, Smoother Than Ever, Debuts Music From New Album Second Chance On 'BET Awards' Show

el debarge
El DeBarge's triumphant return to the stage at the 2010 "BET Awards" on June 27th was only the beginning of life's second chance for one of R&B Pop's most distinctive and popular voices. On the star-studded show, DeBarge performed the title track from his forthcoming aptly titled album Second Chance, to be released this fall by Geffen Records, and a medley of his R&B smash hits "All This Love, "I Like It," Time Will Reveal," and "Rhythm Of The Night." The soulful performance by the charismatic DeBarge opened an exciting new chapter for the man whose emotional, uplifting music has romanced one generation of fans and is set to do the same for another.
"I want the world to know that everybody deserves a second chance," says DeBarge. His long-awaited fifth solo album, Second Chance tells his story of redemption, which followed a period of personal turmoil for the immensely talented singer and songwriter. Earlier, his tender falsetto and smooth love songs resulted in 16 Top 10s both with his family group DeBarge, one of America's most popular young R&B Pop acts of the '80s, and as a solo artist. But El continued to be heard even after exiting the scene following 1994's Heart Mind And Soul, a collaboration with Babyface. Everyone from The Notorious B.I.G. and Ashanti to Mariah Carey and Patti LaBelle has covered or sampled hits featuring him as lead singer, many of which he also wrote and produced. Now the original is back - refreshed, rededicated and ready to take his place once more among the genuine stars of R&B.
Songs on Second Chance were co-written and co-produced by some of music's most notable hitmakers, including Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Babyface, Mike City, Michael Angelo, Mishka, the Avila Brothers and Ron Fair.

Q&A With El DeBarge
Q: What do you want to tell us with this album? What is your message?
A: I want the world to know that tomorrow is full of second chances, and all your fears should be left behind you.
Q: Why did you write the song "Second Chance"?
A: I wrote "Second Chance" to commemorate all the struggles I went through, and I feel it speaks to struggles in the souls and the hearts of people who are going through what I went through and who want a second chance.
Q: How are you feeling being back?
A: I'm very grateful to be back. It's joyful, it's scary, it's all of that.
Q: Describe your connection to your fans.
A: I love my fans. I like being up close and personal with them, so I really like being on tour more than I like just being in the studio.
Q: Are you a spiritual person?
A: I have a close relationship with God. From the moment I wake up in the morning, the first thing I do is to get on my knees and pray. He's everything to me. He's my music. He's my source of creativity. He's my breath.
Q: What is the El DeBarge sound, and how has it changed and evolved over the years?
A: The El DeBarge sound is soulful, it's joyful, it's filled with intricate harmonies. It talks about life, it talks about love... it hasn't changed, though. It's the same.
Q: What's your songwriting process like? Where do you draw inspiration from?
A: I draw inspiration from walking down the street, from driving, from being in crowds and just vibing off people, but I like to begin my songwriting process with sitting at the piano. That way I can critique and develop what I'm hearing musically.
Q: You've overcome a lot in the past few years. What would be your message to fans?
A: I lost a lot of time, I lost a lot of good friends, but I'm back, though there were some serious consequences. You don't want to go down that road. You don't need to experiment with drugs. Some people say that experience is the best teacher, but you don't need to experience that. Just learn from my mistakes.
Q: You've said recently that self-denial was your first step toward drug abuse, and you lost touch with reality. What's the best way of staying true to yourself?
A: Keep people around you that were in your joy period of life. That's the most authentic period of your life, and that's mostly your childhood and your teens, rather than your "good times" or "bad times," and don't ever lose that. Don't succumb to the new "friendships" that just come out of nowhere. That's not going to do it. That will get you in trouble right there.
Q: What brings joy to your life?
A: A good song makes me feel joyful. I like hearing chords and pretty melodies; I brighten up if I hear something that sounds good. Simple things like that – watching the sun come up, watching the sun set - and last, but definitely not least, a beautiful woman.
Q: Can you talk about some of your favorite tracks on the album?
A: One of my favorite tracks is "How Can You Love Me So Much, Girl?" produced by the Avila Brothers and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Another is "Serenading You." That's for lovers who really want to serenade their woman, and it's written by Mike City. I have quite a few of them.
Q: What can your fans expect from you?
A: Oh, we're going to have a good time when I get back on stage. It's going to be so joyful! We're going to sing some of the old songs, some of the new songs – we're just going to have some fun.

Apple boss Steve Jobs reveals iPhone 4 may be recalled

iphone 4 recall
The much-vaunted new iPhone 4 may be recalled, Apple boss Steve Jobs revealed last night.
Posting a message on the social networking site Twitter, the tycoon said: ‘We may have to recall the new iPhone. This I did not expect.’
Launched in Britain last week, the £500 handset has been dogged by technical problems.
Steve Jobs shows Russian President Dimitry Medvedev the new iPhone 4. The Apple boss has revealed the new phone may be recalled following a glut of complaints
Steve Jobs shows Russian President Dimitry Medvedev the new iPhone 4. The Apple boss said the new phone may be recalled following a glut of complaints

Reception has been found to cut out when users cover a metal band built into the phone’s bottom left-hand corner.
The new iPhone was also said to be unsuitable for left-handed people.
Mr Jobs responded to complaints about the new iPhone losing its signal by telling users to 'just avoid holding it in that way'.
Angry users have complained that the phone's reception suddenly plunges to almost zero when they simply hold it in their hand.
Dozens of videos have been placed on YouTube showing the iPhone 4 losing signal the moment the metal antenna that surrounds the edge of the new device is covered.
Mr Jobs issued his bizarre advice as he responded to an email from a user on the Ars Technica technology news site who had complained about the sudden loss of signal.

In an astonishingly blunt response, Mr Jobs replied: 'Just avoid holding it in that way. All phones have sensitive areas'.
In a statement, Apple said: 'Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas.'
'This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.'
Apple claims that using one of its 'bumpers' - which cost £25 each and clip over the iPhone to protect it - will stop the user's hand interfering with the signal.

Another iPhone 4 ad shows the model's hand blocking the antenna
The firm is selling the rubber bumpers on its website but none will be shipped to the UK until July 16th.
Users have flooded Twitter with rumours about the problem and stop-gap remedies including using tape to cover the bottom of the phone.
Left-handed users are being particularly affected because when they hold the phone in their left hand their fingers cover more of the right-hand side of the phone - where the antenna is.
The left side of the iPhone 4 receives Wi-Fi signals while the right side picks up the 3G signal for calls.
Technology website T3 ran a test using one of the ‘bumper’ cover for the phone which appears to solve the issue.
Danish wireless technology expert called Gert Frølund Pedersen told Wired magazine that the problem is probably because the phone’s new antenna is built into the metal frame which surrounds the device.
‘Human tissue will have an inhibitory effect on the antenna. Touch means that a larger portion of the antenna energy turns into heat and lost.
'This makes the antenna less efficient to send and receive radio signals,’ he said.
A loss of signal, known as attenuation, can occur when an antenna is bridged.
Holding it in your hand will change the length of the antenna and interfere with the specific wavelengths it is calibrated to pick up.
The Apple iPad also faced some teething problems when it was launched with users reporting problems when they tried to connect to wi-fi. A software update had to be issued to sort this problem out.

And the iPhone 4 is not the first Apple 3G phone to have problems with its reception - users also reported problems with the earlier iPhone 3GS when it was first released too.
There have also been early reports of problems with the iPhone’s screen.
Launched by Steve Jobs as ‘retina display’, with an paralleled definition and number of pixels, some users in the US have complained about some yellow discolouration.
The spots can appear in corners and the thin bands have shown up toward the tops and bottoms of customers' screens.
Some Apple insiders on web forums have claimed that the yellow colour is down to the clue that the firm uses to bond the glass on its screens which has not had the time to evaporate.
They claim that the discolouration will clear after a day or two as the glue evaporates.
The iPhone 4 was unveiled earlier this month. At the time, Mr Jobs said it represented 'the biggest leap since the original iPhone'.
It offers video calling, a higher-resolution display and the ability to record and view high-definition video.
The new handset updates the iPhone 3GS which launched a year ago and sold more than a million units in its first weekend.
A spokesperson for Apple was not immediately available to comment.

Fedor Loses And Defeated By Fabricio Werdum

Fabricio Werdum defeated Fedor Emelianenko in the first round on Saturday night at HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. This is the first defeat for Fedor Emelianenko in 10 years. Fedor Emelianenko made an error by carelessly jumping into the Brazilian's guard. Emelianenko was failed to establish the position, giving his head and left arm exposed. From their, Fabricio Werdum never gave a chance to Emelianenko to bounce back and Fedor felt on Werdum's hip. Match referee, John McCarthy called off the first round.

Fedor was on the ground with Rogers he never took advantage of the situation. In the second round Fedor generated a few seconds of excitement with a flurry of blocked punches against the cage, right around this point is when Rogers got a little too highly likely that the two will meet again very soon as the next President's Cup is coming up and a rubber match between the champions will be inevitable.

The fight, a tournament bout, was stopped after approximately 15 seconds when Emelianenko received a significant cut from an illegal elbow from Kohsaka. Normally, a stoppage caused by an illegal strike would result in a no contest or a DQ victory for the recipient. Until tapping out to Fabricio Werdum on June 26, 2010, Emelianenko had one official loss on his record (to Tsuyoshi Kohsaka), though it came under highly irregular circumstances.
