Arkansas flooding death toll revised to 16, witnesses share their experiences

The death toll in the Arkansas flooding has been revised from 20 to 16. Arkansas Emergency Management Officials had said that 20 people had died but without explanation, later said the death toll was 16. Earlier today, the Red Cross said that there were as many as 300 people in the area. Authorities have said that they know at least 36 people are missing. In the video players below, you may hear survivors as they share their first-hand accounts during the flood.

The Salvation Army in Arkansas has responded to the tragedy and has provided food, water, and emotional and spiritual help to those in need. A command center has been established in Langley, Arkansas.

CNN spoke with a survivor who described waking up after 2:00 a.m., hearing screams from those trying to outrun the floods and seeking higher ground. Nick Hofert assisted families and led them into his home and then searched for others. In an interview with Rick Sanchez, Nick Hofert said that the water rose faster than anything he’d ever seen. News reports say that the rains fell faster than 8’ per hour. There are five people receiving treatment in local hospitals.
