The Mets took North Carolina right-hander Matt Harvey with the seventh pick in baseball’s amateur draft tonight. He was 8-3 with a 3.09 ERA and struck out 102 in 96 innings this year. A scouting report on mlb.com says Harvey was throwing up to 96-97 mph this season. He was picked in the third round by the Angels in 2007 but did not sign. Baseball America noted that he was at that time considered the top prep prospect in the country, ahead of Rick Porcello, who is obviously pitching for the Tigers now. BA said he struck out 15 in a 158-pitch complete game at Clemson and his final pitch was 96.

Harvey, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound junior, was 8-3 with a 3.09 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 96 innings for the Tar Heels this season.
"This pick goes in line with what we feel is important <emdash /> we talk about pitching, we talk about defense, we talk about speed," general manager Omar Minaya said. "This pick goes in line with what we're trying to build here. To be able to bring Matt Harvey aboard is trying to stay on that focus, especially with our ballpark."
Harvey was a third-round pick of the Los Angeles Angels out of high school in 2007, but chose not to sign. He went 7-2 in both his freshman and sophomore years, but saw his ERA rise from 2.79 to 5.40. He bounced back this season to show he has ace-type ability.
"After going through college for three years, what I feel were the best three years of my life, getting to watch the draft and being selected by the Mets seventh overall is something I really take pride in," Harvey said.
Harvey sometimes struggles with his command, but has a fastball that sits in the mid-90s and mixes in a power curve and a hard slider. His top performance came when he had a career-high 15 strikeouts against Clemson in April.
"As far as comparing him to someone that's in the big leagues, you know, perhaps he's someone in the mold of Mike Pelfrey," scouting director Rudy Terrasas said during a conference call. "Big, strong, durable-type body with a good arm."
The Mets selected Pelfrey with the ninth overall pick in the 2005 draft. The 6-foot-7 righty is in the middle of a breakout season, carrying an 8-1 record and a 2.39 ERA into Tuesday night's start against the San Diego Padres.
Also Monday, the Mets selected the contract of outfielder Jesus Feliciano from Triple-A Buffalo.
