READER OPINION: Church is a centerpiece, by Gail Wood
mae westI would like to thank all the local artists and photographers who donated their pictures for our fundraising calendar to support the West Swanzey Community Church steeple project.
Thanks also to all the supporters who donated money for the rebuilding of the steeple. Everyone was so generous and helpful.
The calendars should be ready for sale at Old Home Days in Swanzey on July 17. Please look for us there to purchase yours for 2011. They will make great gifts.
Some of the original art work reproduced on the calendar will be auctioned off at a later date. We will be taking silent bids at Old Home Days in Swanzey Center for this artwork.
It has been a pleasure working with the ladies of the church. Seeing old friends, many I have not seen in more than 25 years, and meeting new people who attended the church dinners, has been a joy.
Many have come from out of town to support us. We have decided we are going to keep the church suppers going to support the many other projects that need to be done.
Special thanks to the committee who has worked for many months on this project.
We will be having a chicken BBQ and antique car cruise night on July 10, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. The cost is $10 for dinner.
These ladies know how to cook and put on a great meal. Stop by and see the new steeple.
Finally, a special thanks to “Mae West,” the mysterious lady who dropped off letters with clues to her identity and included $100 bills in them. We still don’t know who she is, but she gave us a total of $1,000 to support this project.
I have lived in West Swanzey all my life and see the church from my front window every day. I felt, as part of the community, it was just natural to want to help when this church needed our support. I never thought when we started it would be so rewarding and so much fun. Thanks to all those who have been involved.
